Spanning over a space of 1,200 square metres, the threads of Berlin-based Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota’s works intertwine, entangle, and unravel into seven large-scale installations that encompass over twenty years of the artist’s personal experiences. Housed at the Grand Palais in Paris, France, “The Soul Trembles” is the largest exhibition showcasing Shiota’s works that morph to the space it is presented in — a practice that followed its Asia-Pacific tour since its first presentation in 2019.
No exhibition is the same, as Shiota personally adapts her works and her emotions to the space. “I thought about my soul and what happens when my body is gone — would my soul remain?” The exhibition is a vulnerable presentation of the artist’s introspection on the gravity of her soul, as she draws from life’s fragility to create uncanny poetic representations of emotion that are deeply moving.
As visitors discern between yarns of sadness, love, and even death at “The Soul Trembles”, one thread speaks of hope at K11 MUSEA. Suspended in the heart of the retail destination since 2022, Chiharu Shiota’s I hope… represents an uplifting message of the possibilities of the future, as steel boats and 5,000 handwritten letters float in an ocean of collective wishes, reminding visitors to remain hopeful in the face of uncertainty.
